Cuando Prince Royce lanzó su auto-titulado álbum debut hace dos años, tenía un sueño muy específico acerca de las posibilidades del éxito del álbum.
«Mi esperanza era vender 5.000 copias», dice el cantante de 22 años con una sonrisa. «Llamaba a mis primos y les preguntaba, ¿crees que tal vez pueda vender un poco más de 5.000 CDs? porque eso sería algo impresionante».
Como resultado, Prince Royce ha hecho mucho, mucho más que vender 5.000 álbumes. Certificado Triple Disco de Platino en EEUU y Puerto Rico y Doble Disco de Platino en Chile, el álbum ha cosechado una lista interminable de honores y premios: dos nominaciones al Latin GRAMMY, siete Premios Lo Nuestro, cuatro Premios Juventud y cuatro Premios Billboard (actualmente nominado a doce Premios Billboard).
Prince Royce fue el artista latino con más #1s en el 2011 según los listados de fin de año de la revista Billboard; colaboró con el súper-grupo mexicano Maná y el icono del reggaetón Daddy Yankee; incursionó en una gira de conciertos con Enrique Iglesias y Pitbull. Y con dos giras totalmente vendidas por Europa y los EEUU, el cantante se convirtió en una de las máximas estrellas de la música latina contemporánea.
Pero este éxito fenomenal no ha sucedido por coincidencia. Prince Royce llegó a la escena musical con un arma poderosa: «Stand By Me», una dulce y auténtica versión bachata de la clásica canción de pop. Los estilos de bachata – haciendo eco de la cultura dominicana de Royce – y el sentimiento expresado a través de las cualidades vocales del joven lo ayudaron a catapultarlo al estrellato.
El sencillo se convirtió en la primera canción de bachata tocada en la radio anglosajona/popular en los EEUU, uniendo ritmos latinos aún más a la cultura estadounidense. El resto de las canciones del álbum dicen mucho sobre el talento de Royce como compositor y su capacidad para sentirse como en casa en representación de sus raíces latinas, al mismo tiempo siendo parte de la cultura norteamericana.
Con su segundo sencillo, “Corazón Sin Cara”, de su propia autoría, Royce sobrepasó el éxito de “Stand By Me” cuando la canción alcanzó la posición #1 en el listado de Billboard “Latin Songs” (incluyendo canciones de todos los géneros). Además fue la canción latina #1 del 2011 en los listados de fin de año de la revista.
Ahora, el cantante está dispuesto a consolidar aún más su reputación con PHASE II, un segundo álbum repleto de resplandecientes paisajes sonoros de bachata y emotivas baladas latinas – e inclusive con un toque de mariachi, también.
Sin embargo, comenzar no fue nada fácil.
«Ha sido el mayor desafío de mi carrera hasta ahora», admite. «Cuando escribí el primer álbum, yo era sólo un chico con un sueño. La música era un hobby, y yo escribí esas canciones sin saber el poder que con el tiempo tendrían, ni que llegarían a tocar a tantas personas diferentes. Entonces, ¿cómo hacerlo todo otra vez? yo ya no era ese chico en el Bronx con todo el tiempo del mundo. Y todos esperaban tanto de mi segundo álbum».
Royce respondió al desafío volviendo a sus raíces. Pasó un tiempo en Nueva York, volviendo a visitar a su familia las veces que podía. Empezó a escribir un día a la vez, al igual que al principio.
«A su tiempo, regresó la vibra creativa», dice entusiasmado. «Me sentí como yo otra vez y estaba seguro del nuevo material.»
Componer y grabar PHASE II tomó un año entero – permitiendo que los nuevos sonidos maduraran por su cuenta, perfeccionando cada melodía, cada coro, cada pedacito de la letra.
«Las canciones hermosas no materializan en el primer intento», dice Royce. «Escribí muchas canciones que después decidí no incluir. También terminé grabando el disco en todas partes: Nueva York, Miami, la República Dominicana».
Las cualidades épicas del proyecto se han manifestado de inmediato. El primer sencillo «Las Cosas Pequeñas» es una hermosa canción estilo bachata pop – que cuenta con los ritmos auténticos de bongó que definen el género dominicano, así como las guitarras en espiral que le dan a la bachata ese sentimiento romántico.
«Es una canción sobre las pequeñas cosas que verdaderamente importan», explica Royce. «No tiene que ver con el mundo material, sino más bien lo que no cuesta dinero pero significa mucho, como un paseo por el parque o una llamada telefónica de alguien a quien quieres».
La majestuosa canción «Incondicional» logra una fusión audaz: música de mariachi con bachata. «No fue fácil, pero realmente siento que funciona», dice riendo. «Es una canción sobre el amor incondicional- No necesariamente entre un hombre y una mujer, sino también entre hermanos y hermanas, madres y padres, los padres y sus hijos, la clase de amor que siempre está ahí por encima de todo».
Una de las canciones favoritas de Royce parece ser, «Dulce», una canción incluida en dos versiones: bachata, y acústica, con solo piano y voz (grabada junto al reconocido pianista Arthur Hanlon).
«Se trata del embarazo de una adolescente», dice el cantante. «Hay muchas chicas que quedan embarazadas cuando aún están en la escuela secundaria. Sus padres se enfadan con ellas, enfrentan muchas situaciones difíciles y pueden que perder la esperanza. Con esta canción, yo quería decirle a las chicas que sequen sus lágrimas, sean fuertes y sigan yendo a la escuela. Las cosas van a estar bien».
Sin lugar a dudas, PHASE II continuará poniendo en alto la reputación de Prince Royce como uno de los jóvenes cantautores más talentosos del nuevo milenio del pop latino. Curiosamente, el cantante ha logrado este nivel de éxito manteniéndose fiel a sus raíces culturales y a los ritmos seductores de la bachata.
«De niño, cada verano íbamos a visitar a mis abuelos en la República Dominicana», dice Royce, con un toque de nostalgia en su voz. «Y eso es todo lo que escuchaba durante los veranos – bachata tradicional. Cuando empecé a soñar con convertirme en cantante, sentí que quería contribuir al crecimiento de la bachata en este país y ser parte de ese movimiento. Es mi cultura, y yo estoy feliz de poder ayudar a mantenerla viva a través de la música».

When Prince Royce released his self-titled debut two years ago, he had a very specific dream about the album’s potential success.
«I was hoping it would sell 5,000 copies,» the 22 year-old singer says with a smile. «And I would call my cousins and ask them: do you think perhaps I’ll be able to sell a little bit over 5,000? Because that would be just awesome.»
As it turns out, Prince Royce did much, much more than sell 5,000 copies. Certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA, it collected an endless list of honors and awards: two Latin GRAMMY nominations, seven Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, four Premios Juventud Awards and four Latin Billboards (currently nominated for 12 more). Prince Royce was the artist with the most #1s on Billboard’s 2011 Year End Charts. He collaborated with Mexican supergroup Maná and reggaeton icon Daddy Yankee, toured with Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. Two sold-out tours of Europe and the U.S. later, the singer became one of the biggest stars in contemporary Latin music.
There was nothing coincidental about this success. Prince Royce arrived on the music scene armed with a powerful weapon: a sweet, genre-defining bachata version of the pop classic «Stand By Me.» The authentic bachata stylings – echoing Royce’s Dominican background – and the soulful qualities of the young man’s voice catapulted him into stardom.
The single became the first bachata song ever to be played on mainstream radio in the United States, bringing Latin rhythms even closer to American culture. The remaining tracks on the album spoke volumes about Royce’s songwriting talent and his ability to feel right at home both representing his Latin roots and as part of the American mainstream.
Now, the singer is ready to further cement his reputation with Phase II, a second album of shimmering bachata soundscapes, heartfelt Latin ballads – and a hint of mariachi, too.
Getting started was easier said than done, though.
«It was the hardest challenge of my career so far,» he admits. «When I wrote the first album, I was just a kid with a dream. Music was a hobby, and I wrote those songs not knowing the power that they would eventually have, touching so many different people. So how do you do it all over again? I wasn’t that kid in the Bronx with all the time in the world anymore. And everybody was expecting so much from my second album.»
Royce responded to the challenge by going back to his roots. He spent some time in New York, returning to see his family as much as he could. He started writing one day at a time, like in his early days.
«Soon enough, I got the creative vibe back,» he enthuses. «I felt like myself again. I was confident with the new material.»
Writing and recording Phase II took a full year – allowing the new sounds to mature on their own, perfecting every chorus, every bit of lyric.
«Beautiful songs don’t materialize on the first try,» he offers. «I wrote many tunes that later decided not to use. We also ended up recording the album all over the place: New York, Miami, the Dominican Republic.»
The epic qualities of the project become apparent right away. Lead single «Las Cosas Pequeñas» is a gorgeous pop song with bachata stylings – boasting the authentic bongó beats that define the quintessential Dominican genre, as well as the spiraling guitars that give bachata such a romantic vibe.
«It’s a song about the little things that matter,» explains Royce. «Not from the material world, but rather the ones that cost nothing, like a walk in the park or a phone call from someone you love.»
The majestic «Incondicional» accomplishes a daring fusion: mariachi with bachata. «It wasn’t easy, but I really think we made it work,» he laughs. «This is a song about unconditional love – not only between a man and a woman, but also between brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, parents and their kids. The kind of love that is always there for you.»
Royce’s own personal favorite is probably «Dulce,» a song included in two different versions: bachata, and a pared-down recording with solo piano and voice.
«It’s about teen pregnancy,» says the singer. «There are so many girls who get pregnant while still in high school. Their parents get upset at them and eventually they give up hope. With this song, I wanted to tell those girls to wipe those tears away and continue going to school. Things are gonna be OK.»
Undoubtedly, Phase II will continue expanding Prince Royce’s reputation as one of the most talented young voices in new millennium Latin pop. Interestingly, the singer has achieved this level of success remaining true to his cultural roots and the seductive strains of bachata.
«Growing up, every summer I would take a plane and visit my grandparents in the Dominican Republic,» says Royce with a hint of nostalgia in his voice. «And that’s all I would hear during those summers: old-school bachata. When I started dreaming about becoming a singer, I felt that I wanted to contribute to the growth of bachata in this country. It’s my culture, and I’m just happy to keep it alive through music.»
